Green Day - Holiday Lyrics

Say hey!

Hear the sound of the falling rain,
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (Hey!)
The shame, The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war again

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protestor has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men (Hey!)
A gag, A plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

"The representative from California has the floor"
Zieg Heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your PUNISHMENT
Pulverize the Eiffel tower
Criticize your GOVERNMENT
Bang bang goes the broken glass man
Kill all the fags that DON'T AGREE
Trials by fire setting fires
Is not a way that's MEANT FOR ME

Just cause, just cause, because we're outlaws, yeaahhh!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is our lives on holiday

I really like this song. One of my favorites off the album. It's a nice catchy, marching tune. Definatly politically motivated, shows their opinion of the state of the United States very well.

Note: the line written "Seek out to the president gasbag" above is actually (as seen in liner notes) "Seig heil to the president gasman."

Umm.. do you get the lyrics by listening to the song over and over...YOU CAN'T LISTEN VERY WELL! half of it is wrong. next time get the lyrics book before you submit something.

"Coming down like an Armageddon plague"
Yea its "comming down like an Armageddon Flame"

"There's a song sounding out of key"
It's "Hear the dogs howling out of key"

do you want me to continue??

I like this song. It's cool, got a good beat, and I can play it on my guitar! :P

Okay...you kind of killed the lyrics....my suggestion would be that you go back and read the actual book. I know that song and your lyrics almost made me forget it.

I love this song. One of the best on the album. Agree completly with NEO (#20). Politically motivated.

"Hear the dogs howling out of key,"
IS ACTUALLY :
"Every dog howls out of key"

That's bullshit! (To the comment above) Read the book that came with the fucking cd.

Don't worrry, I went through the whole song and corrected it, Im going to be doing for all the song's in the next few days....Yeah...
Posted by: Scythe7 (#1924) on 3/17/05 10:23:58 am
geez, people soooo mad over small errors, anyways, i am rating the song, not the persons ability to hear correctly, this is way better than BLVD, but not as good as American Idiot.
Posted by: Neo (#20) on 3/19/05 01:56:15 am
they may be small errors...but I don't know how many people out there are like me and want a 100% correct version to learn the words from. It's easier to play that way you know :P
PS. the video for this song is horrid. If it comes on your tv, I recommend turning it off.

This song is so damn catchy. It's one of those songs I am unable to get out of my head throughout the day. I prefer Dookie but, hey. Green Day's a really awesome band and I think if they never changed they wouldn't be expressing themselves how they wanted to. I could care less.
Posted by: greendayholiday (#3131) on 4/16/05 11:56:36 am
I'm listening to this song now. It's a good one on the CD.
Posted by: yoshi17 (#3492) on 6/09/05 09:09:36 pm
the only problem is they play it to damn much and its this, american idiot ,and blvd that all these people listen to and think there hardcore greenday fans
Posted by: Lyndzy (#3722) on 7/18/05 10:00:50 am
hey yoshi17 i listen to holiday & american idiot & blvd but i listen 2 their other songs too just cuz u listen 2 those songs doesnt make you not a hardcore fan

"Zieg Heil"
if supposed to be correct in German
is
"Sieg Heil"
(iam german and "Zieg" is no German Word)

if it is supposed to be alternative

never mind ;)
Posted by: female (#3756) on 7/22/05 07:01:03 pm
haha the best things in life are green ;)
they have a very good gueastion
"Is that a way thats ment for me?"
Posted by: rsmith38 (#3789) on 7/27/05 12:30:11 pm
I think it's well-said. It fits with the plot-line of the album well.

Note: it's "triumph by fires setting fires is not a way that's meant for me."

If Green Day or any fans care to give a better way to deal with the terrorism situation after 911, I would really like to hear your intelligent advice and council. Attacking the hand that feeds you to me seems counter productive (which Green Day with this song has clearly done). We should support our troops, not criticize what they are trying to do for our country and freedom in the Middle East. Freedom to the Middle East! Where are the feminists that want women to have freedom? The women can walk through the streets of Iraq without wearing burqas. If you don't support freedom perhaps you should go to some country that does! Someone tell me how much oil we have taken from Iraq? We will buy oil from them eventually but it won’t be oil money that goes to Saddam. Iraq is now free; it is a republic.
Posted by: eMEraLdwPn (#1) on 8/15/05 06:41:22 am
the united states government has no interest in making iraq free. what about the civil wars in africa? why haven't we tried to stop them? because they don't have oil for us to steal. the only thing you're right about is not criticizing the troops, because a lot of them don't want to be there either. i certainly will not support them though.

zieg heil = zieg welfare

Posted by: Dave (#3944) on 8/21/05 08:21:46 pm
since wen did this song have anythin to do with iraq, bush (wanker), or terrorism
Posted by: Dave (#3944) on 8/21/05 08:28:42 pm

Posted by: Annabelle (#3946) on 8/22/05 12:50:21 am
No you are all wrong. it goes (this is in the booklet) "trials by fire setting fire is not the way that's meant for me!"
Posted by: xoxCandyxox (#3943) on 8/23/05 01:54:26 pm
Bonjour Drewdropin but umm like its none President Eejits problem they told him to mind your own business and get the hell outta their country before they bomb yours again. Gosh when is he gonna get it. Will they have to blow up the white house?

Green Day has got the right idea!
Posted by: b_funk2 (#4038) on 9/06/05 04:27:19 pm
Just because you criticize government policy doesn't mean you are abandoning the troops. Indeed it is by questioning foreign policy you are doing a great service to the troops, ensuring that they're brave lives are not squandered needlessly. It is a great duality, it is the soldier who gives his life for the freedom to protest and the protestor who ensures that those lives are not needlessly sacraficed.

It is a good song, there is a shameful lack of protest songs in these troubling times.
Posted by: The good doctor (#4094) on 9/14/05 10:20:55 am
People have some nerve saying that people who speak out are abandonning the troops when the fact of the matter is that the current administration abandonned the troops when they sent them off to war completely unprepared. As Americans are we just supposed to sit back and be happy about it? America was founded on the idea that citizens have a right to decent. That is exactly what this is. Saying otherwise is well... unAmerican. And you can quote me on that.

Okay, may I ask why some of you are bickering about the American government? If you are going to, take it to private mail or something, but keep comments about the song here, damn it. And quit being so damn stereotypical. I AM AMERICAN. Yes, I am, but unlike some of you may think, I am not somw arrogant punk who could care less about countries.

I know Bush sucks. Yes, I wish he wasn't there either. But he's out in about three years. So SHUT UP ALREADY.

And this song is pretty neat, only they're killing it on radios.

Any person has a constitutionally givin right to disagree and even protest, eventhough most of said protesters have never read this most important of documents, but when you open your mouth, you are not guaranteed the right not to be crushed by FACTS and made to look stupid by those who have more intellegence in thier stool. When you vocabulary consists of OIL, OIL, OIL, BAD BUSH BAD, and more OIL, should just keep quit. You'll look smarter. Green Day is undoubtedly a very talented group, however many men and women throughout the years that talent and brains often don't go together. So go put on your headphones, and pick up a history book. You might just learn that the world is slightly more complex than OIL. And if you want to save Africa.... stop sending them money. Warlords get everything. You want to fight a war against the people your liberal friends are supporting with AIDS money. AND Why do you think they can't feed, clothe, or support themselves....YOU CAN'T WORK WITH YOUR HAND OUT.

this thing about troops dont want to be there, it was the troops choice to enlist in the military and they knew the responsibilities and the consequences of there actions, and i bet every one of those troops are proud to serve under bushes comand god bless america!

I hate this song. Period.
No one cares about their political views.
Especially from a clown like Billie Joe Armstrong.

AKA "G.I. Joe in Panty Hose".
Posted by: Johnyboy101 (#4538) on 3/14/06 09:35:21 pm
Dude Zeig heil is a german slang for seig heil meaning We Will Win. It was used by the nazis as an alter to hail hitler. By the way you read to much into it, greenday, good artist, but you shouldn't take advice on politics from pot heads
Posted by: philzang (#4644) on 4/18/06 08:24:11 am
OK, you are all f****** idiots...
If you bothered to even ask anyone who speaks German, or anyone who knows any bit of it you would find out that it means something totally different. Yes, heil means welfare, but it's not the welfare that you are thinking of. The whole phrase means basically 'God keep you well'.
The reason that it was said to Hitler was to praise him, and a wish to 'keep him safe'.
It does not mean 'we will win' it is closer to 'to your victory'.
It was only a praise for when he came in front of a crowd.
I have to agree...don't take political advice from potheads, and especially don't talk about things you know nothing about.

It kind of amuses me to think that a song intended as a liberal political statement can actually be interpreted as conservative in some aspects. For example

The most literal interpretation of "the ones who died without a name" are the victims of abortion, who never got names in the first place. Of course, one doesn't imagine Green Day is at all pro-life, and they'd probably be pretty pissed at that interpretation of their song, hence my amusement.
Posted by: Darrenlobo (#4747) on 5/29/06 04:45:50 am
Our friends at Green day are actually libertarian, not liberal or conservative.
Posted by: cc (#4762) on 6/05/06 11:29:46 pm
You are all morons,
to start off, seig heil means "hail victory" if you don't believe me look at wikipedia, and yes it was said To hitler

And with the war in Irag, dude, the Us has no right to be in there, Their not free there occupied by the US. Bush had no right to send in troops to Iraq, and i am not the only one who said so because originly th UN said not to go in. Bush is a bully, and he needs to know where and when to point his stupid guns. Has any one seen bowling for colbine ( sorry for the spelling!). Honestly i don't see how he got into government, however he is, and he will be out soon. So may Greenday rock, the US quit bombing countries they can't even pronounce properly, and if you watch some news, the damn people can't even pronounce Iraq. So i end with GO GREENDAY!!!
Posted by: Yogali (#4876) on 8/09/06 06:33:00 am
lol americans pronounce Iraq 'eye-rack'. serves you right for not using proper English!
